Firmware for YP-U2

Looking for the latest firmware update for the YP-U2 player. I hear it's v. 1.301. It seems you can't get it through Samsung's global website any more.

Hmm, YP-U2:1.300 is what I have listed on the Master List on the Downloads page. This site mostly has the firmware from Samsung Korea, which is all in english by default I should add, which works on the same Yepps all around the world. The 1.301 just means it is the one being distributed globally or to NA/Europe. But they should be identical in terms of features and options. When I started this site, the special Samsung Korea site would always have everything months, sometimes years in advance of the rest of the world, if we ever got it (Which in many cases we never did, the personalized 7.300 firmware was never brought here and it makes the player 10x better than the YP-55 10x better than it was before... - 3 years after it was released on the Korea site it's still never come here). They are getting better at it now, but they still goof up sometimes, like in this case it sounds like.

I suggest you give it a shot, if it's not what you want you can always keep checking for 1.301, but I'm confident you won't have to .

Hi Catphract,
I would like to know what the YP-U2 firmware you offer on your site is for.  I know that most people are looking for way to transfer files to the player in USB mode.  I have yet to find a way to put the unit in USB mode, so you can simply drag and drop to the player's memory.
Any input on this matter would be appreciated.

Hey X-Doom,

This firmware is stated as being stability fixing primarily, so it sounds like it is designed to make it more stable, either before needing a new flash or postponing crashes or feature problems. It could be quite similar to 1.301 except for being the Korean release version, as opposed to the North American one (none or very little difference between the firmware versions in that case). All the firmwares default to English, and include multilingual support..

About it being used as a USB drive, that sucks..I've never heard of a Yepp not being able to operate in that mode. That's always how I've used all my Yepp players. Take a look at this:

Korean U2 Manual

It was released a few days before the newest firmware upgrade came out. On page 30 it seems to show the F: drive as the Yepp, but I can't be sure since I can't read it. It does say "<USB Transferring>" and it seems to show someone moving files from a local music folder to a USB Flash Drive...So there should be a way...

My suggestion is that you try it in a different computer without any drivers - usually it will detect it as a USB Storage Device in that case. You can also try doing a full uninstall of the Yepp software, then install the new firmware update from this site or the Samsung site and see if you can detect it as a USB device after the flash.

Thanks CC for the info.  I installed the software on my computer.  It adds an updater program my list.  I run the updater but the device is not detected.  I am wondering if there is recovery mode for this device as well.
Was there any instructions to apply this U2 FW on my unit?

Thanks again,
X-Doomer

Never mind the instructions.  After trying different ways of connecting the device, I held the power up button while connecting the player and it detected a USB drive like in the Korean user guide.  Just tought I would pass it on to the Forum.

Thank you again for providing the FW to me.

No problem, I'm happy to do so .

By the way, did it fix the problem you were asking about?

I just bought the YP-U2 and i'm having problems with ogg vorbis playback, so i thought maybe upgrading the FW would be a good idea.
However my player claims it has FW version 1.352, while the lastest available from Samsung is 1.300.
I'm a bit confused, what should i do ?

Merry Christmas - actually, you do have the latest North American version. The U2 v. 1.350 was only posted a few days ago and I haven't added it to the site here yet because of all the craziness happening during the holiday season - but I am planning to do the update today .

You can definitely try an older version and see if that helps - but the best thing to do is to describe the problems here. You can also try searching the forum, others may have reported the problems already. It may be that neither firmware has that fix, but there may be some workaround that will fix it (I think for instance that some Ogg versions are not recognized properly, conversion to another version fixes it - but explain your issue, this may not be your problem).

So post ,

After a long time i got some time to play around with my father's U2. I was able to solve the Ogg Vorbis problem i described above by reducing the tag size of the files (tags over 1k make the U2 crash).
However, i got another little issue: i upgraded the firmware to 2.16, but the version on this site is for the U2 with radio. I have the EU (U2ZB, original firmware was 1.352) version without the radio tuner, so id rather have the correct firmware to avoid crashes.

I have tried [url=http://www.samsung.com/tw/support/productsupport/download/Model_Select.aspx?type=&typecode=200600&subtype=&subtypecode=200601&model=YP-K5QB&filetype=FM&language=]this>Link
site, but that firmware has also the radio functions. Strangely its number is 2.165...

So any idea where could i get the correct firmware ?

Good job figuring that out, and thanks for posting that for others as well - I find nothing worse than coming to a forum where someone posted the exact same problem as me then just never added any further comments or just said it's fixed with no explanation. It's great that you followed up - thanks

Try the European Samsung sites, since thats the only place where the do that funny thing of not including radios. Maybe its a regulation to avoid a device having too many capaiblities? I dunno, like Microsoft not being able to include Media Player - Samsung can't include Radio tuners with it's MP3 players... v odd stuff, unless it's a regulation.

I actually bought my YP-55X over the internet from Germany (thanks again to the forum users who helped me confirm that - I appreciate it and still really like this player ) - but for the most part the players there have no radios even though they are otherwise identical.

2.165 is the North American version of 2.16, they just add the extra 5 there to indicate the different Zone. They are usually generally equal in terms of stability, but the Korean versions on this site usually have a bunch of extra features that the North American versions just never seem to get. So that's why we have the Downloads section (that and many times we have the firmware up here months b4 Samsung NA gets around to posting it)

Thanks, i finally found the EU firmware on the german site (i'm almost sure it wasn't there yesterday when i was looking...).
Btw. are you sure the 2.165 is the US firmware ? Because ive seen somewhere that the US versions do not support Ogg Vorbis and UMS, but they work finr on my U2 with the mentioned firmware.
And one more thing: i didnt notice any difference between the 2.16 (Korean) and 2.165 (US ?) versions except the version number in the About section. The both seem to be the same.

hmm, I've not heard about the US versions not supporting ogg, unless they are old versions, usually for much older players than this.

For some versions the differences are minute, but it really depends. I know with some older versions the Korean versions had extra features such as lyrics support that the US didn't have, along with some extra character support. It really differs from player to player, and version to version though.

Out of curiousity what EU version are you using now? So you're all set with no worries about the FM mode being there now?

Currently i'm using the 2.162 firmware without the radio functions.
Indeed, lyrics function was present both in the korean (2.16) and US (2.165) versions, but it didn't work for me, maybe because the latest LyricsStation (v2.55) does not list the U2 in the device dropdown menu.

Some people mentioned broken Ogg Vorbis playback (crackling) in the new 2.16x FW, but i haven't encountered such issues.

On dapreview.net it is stated that Ogg Vorbis support in the US version has been removed by a FW upgrade. If  the 2.165 version is truly the US firmware then they are obviously wrong

Pardon me if I start a new topic.

I have a YP-U2 that is a few months old and I updated the FW to VER. 1351.  It worked perfectly--I was able to drag and drop without a problem and play songs--but now, suddenly, the unit says it is recharging, but the battery doesn't even last for booting up.  Has anyone seen this problem before and know how to solve it?  Thanks.

No problem, though you might want to make a new topic next time rather than replying here too .

Ouch though, that sucks. Why upgrade to that firmware version in particular? I'm not sure if there is a reset button on the U2, like removing the AA/AAA battery from the other players. I think though the best idea might be to upgrade to newest version from this site, if it is detected by the computer.

Did this start right after you upgraded to 1351?
