Update: I think that all the tests on the G60J and JX despite people reporting them as being run at 1366x768 or a similar resolution rather than the 1280x1024 default that all computers with higher than that resolution default to.

Therefore if you add it up:
1280x1024 = 1310720
1366x768 = -1049088
= 261,632 = 20% fewer pixels. Therefore 20% better performance.

Comparison of 3DMark06 1366x768 results:
G51JX: 10058, SM2.0 4265, SM3.0 4305, CPU: 2988
G60JX: 9911, SM2.0 4318, SM3.0 4429, CPU 2591

Therefore within normal variance.

There is the fact that the G60JX user can overclock further than me, but it may be just because he is running the test at the lower resolution or just a slightly better manufacturered GPU hardware. So this case is settled, QED.

Wish it meant we could have better performance, but at least it means the question has been answered - and maybe, just maybe, the new official 360M drivers when they are finally released will in fact give us a boost .

hello peter
i am from vietnam, sorry for my bad english . i have just owned a G51JX-A1 . I have some questions about Nvidia driver
1) I am using the 196.86 but still wonder which driver gives the best performance in gaming not benching ( i know they are close ) ! For my desktop I have tried many 19x.xx versions but felt some performance drops and lag so I decided to go back to the 185.85
2) there isn't any XP 32 bit driver for GTS 360m so I don't know if I could modify the .inf for the 195.62 to make it recognize the card like Windows 7 drivers
Could you please answer those questions for me?
P/s : FPS games are my favourite

Hello thaigiang,

I can guess that the newer drivers causing performance drops and lag because they were optimized for the newer hardware - so going to a driver that was optimized more for the card you are using in your desktop would give better performance (what card is that by the way?). With the GTS360M though, nVidia hasn't issued a single mainline driver yet so we can hope there will be optimizations in it when they're there.

Some people have been reporting fixes to various flicker and texture issues people were seeing with the GTS360M in new games with 196.86 - so perhaps you should stick with the latest drivers for now.

I don't know about modifying 195.62 in particular - I told Windows 7 to do a scan of all the drivers in my download directory and it chose that one to install. I didn't notice any other differences though to confirm if it really did update the driver (the only difference I observed was the # change in the Control Panel to be honest).

You can try getting your drivers from laptopvideo2go or using their inf mod as a guide to install it. Getting drivers to install on XP32 should be easier than Win7 64. I also found that I could get the drivers installed through the Device Manager and selecting the card manually from the list why I had modified - you can certainly give that a try.

Hope that helps,

PJPeter

Hai, there. I really like your thread. It almost complete review and problems solve about G51Jx.
I got my G51Jx a week ago, and I still can not understand about throttling problem. Is there some kind of error pop up when the notebook is throttling ? Does it the same with the BSOD problem ?

And I'm new with overclocking. I don't what are these number overclocking like 615/2000/1600. What do those number mean ??
How do I set overclocking ?? Does overclocking can make the notebook easily damaged ? Because I never do turbo mode before.

And is there any update driver I need to download ?? Because ASUS support don't have any new driver for me to download.

Thx so much if you replay it. Sorry for my bad english. :D

Hey vanez - welcome .

So far ASUS hasn't issued any new drivers and nVidia has yet to release any official branch-build drivers that support the GTS360M - but I've been checking daily and will let you know when they do . I have also been monitoring the laptopvideo2go site I mentioned above and a couple of other places as well to see if any of the hacked/modded drivers available now make performance any better. So far it seems not - though the modded 196.86s do seem to help with a texture display bug in some newer games - but I will also keep you posted on that as well.

About the problems, the BSOD will be a Blue Screen of Death - you'll know if you get that. Right now ASUS support is asking people to send in mini-dumps if they experience such a BSOD while playing, especially 0x124 ones (you would see that string in the message). So if you experience such an occurrence then call up ASUS or ask them and they will tell you what e-mail to send the mini-dump to. Hopefully they will pinpoint the cause and have a fix soon - but it is a difficult issue since it is random and sometimes will not occur if certain things are different (such as Firefox active in background) and if you do have the problems you can switch to XP which doesn't seem to have the issue (though driver support for that OS is even worse for the GTS360M at the moment - it is still a card that's only been out for just over a month after all).

For the throttling you would notice lower performance out of your CPU that you may be able to see with the naked eye or may need to use a Turbo Boost indicator or CPU FSB/Clock Multiplier Monitor to observe depending on what you are doing. If you think you are experiencing that problem, then try the file I linked to in the throttling post above and see you notice a difference - if so then it's throttling and you should use that app to fix the issue when you experience it. However you may not want to leave it on all the time as the increased power drain could wear out the PSU before its time.

The overclock #s refer to the GPU Clock/Memory Clock/Processor Clock in that order (which is also the order they are displayed in the Overclocking application). The Overclocking app is: Nvidia System Tools 6.05. You can use that to overclock the GPU.

We can't overclock the i7 CPU much at the moment, but there is a limited overclock available via the Power4Gear Hybrid utility while in Extreme Turbo. It isn't much and probably won't cause the CPU to wear out appreciably faster than normal, but if you don't need it then don't use it. When I'm just surfing and working (as I am now) I often have my G51JX set for 'Battery Save' Mode' (all default except with 'Battery Saving Desktop' set to 'No' since it causes the Taskbar to hide itself and 87% screen brightness) - this cuts down on power usage (42W wall draw at the moment) and also makes the system quieter since the fan stays at the lowest setting (CPU idling at max 54*C over the 4 Cores with the GPU @ 56*C at the moment). It also helps prolong the system as a whole and makes me feel better environmentally - all in all a good thing . If I notice something is going slow then I switch over to High Performance mode until the system catches up or until I stop using the CPU intensive program and then back to Battery Saving Mode. I have to say though that 90% of the time the system feels just as responsive at this mode as at maximum - so it's great that Battery Saving Mode while on AC is an option .

Hey techno_guy,

Welcome, and thanks .

I just did a test based on the images in that link, and I don't see any such banding in Paint or on the BBC site - nor have I noticed it anywhere else. It reminds me of the 'grainy' screen issue with my last ASUS laptop the Z96JS - eventually ASUS released a new beta BIOS to fix it but until then it was extremely annoying. In that case though on XP showed the issue - in those pics it shows even the BIOS has the problem so it could be the screen hardware itself - but you probably know more on the banding issue than I since you've had to deal with it already - what I can say though is that I don't observe anything like that on my G51JX's Full HD screen .

One comment I will make is that I noticed the colours were displayed quite differently than on my previous laptop - I found that changing the Colour Balance controls via the 'Eye/Fish' button helped, though I may eventually go into the nVidia settings and adjust the Gamma/Brightness to match my old screen exactly - but besides the colour presets not being spot on I've had quite a pleasant experience with this monitor. I really like having the Full HD 1920x1080 display - yes sometimes if the font size is set too low I will set Firefox to zoom in but 99% of the time it works great and I really appreciate the ability to display 2x the content of a standard 1366x768 screen. If you have the extra res you can reduce it - but if you don't have it, then you're stuck. This laptop though definitely has it .

I spent 25 hours trying to reproduce the 0x124 BSOD issue but without any success. As mentioned before, it's complicated and the games it happens in are varied as is the frequency and background tasks can mitigate the effects. The G51J-A1 0x124 BSOD Wiki is a good reference point, though it has become less useful since the G51J BIOS was released and since the symptoms are not identical between the G51Jx and G51J (there seems to be different games affected between the two). The most popular game to see the problem on is "Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer" and just about any game in that series. It could be combination of factors, including the BIOS, Windows 7's ACPI tables, memory allocation and various other aspects.

Currently ASUS is working on a fix and is asking for mini-dumps - but as I said, I haven't seen the issue. Maybe it will appear after some time (as it did for some G51J users) or my unit might not be susceptible to the problem for some reason - either way though, I look forward to it getting resolved soon. I just hope users will test things thoroughly so ASUS fixes all the cases, and that the same tests are done after to make sure the fix doesn't cause more problems than it solves - but it's like that for all software issues of course...

As a positive update though, LaptopVideo2Go has posted new 197.13 drivers - it might be worth testing to see if there is any fixes or performance enhancements in that - you can get it here: Link

Hi all,

As an update - yesterday a user reported that ASUS sent him a new BIOS that fixes the BSOD issue . Two users have installed it, though I haven't gotten a definitive report yet that the BSOD no longer occurs on systems where it was previously happening.

The message attached to it from ASUS is:

quote:

Dear Valued Customer,

Please try to update the attached latest BIOS(205).

If you continue to experience issues in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best Regards,

Vivian
ASUS Customer Service

I have mirrored the BIOS here in the Downloads section of the G51JX Stuffopolis Entry.

I have not yet tested the fix as I have not yet experience the problem and so wouldn't be able to reliably report the issue as fixed or not at this point. Hopefully someone with the BSOD issue (perhaps you, reader?) can do a test and see if the problem is solved.

One other update that is very cool, someone posted thermal images of the G51JX while running 3DMark06. They're pretty cool (no pun intended) - check them out here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1504223 .

As a sample, here is a pic of the G51JX in Battery Saving Mode while at Windows 7 Desktop:

With Extreme Turbo Enabled with 3DMark06 running the 'Deep Freeze' Test:

More cool pics with the thermal camera are visible at the link - thanks go to synapsis for posting them .

3 different users have now reported that the 0x124 BSOD issue is solved by the 205 BIOS - so we have a fix it seems . So we have a work around for the throttling issue and a BSOD fix - excellent .

About the LEDs, it appears to be a design change from the G51J - the first run of G51Jx notebooks used left-over G51J lids and so still had the LED included for the lower horizontal bar - however newer G51Jx units now do not include that LED and the bar is just a metallic decoration that does not light. In both cases there is no connector/ribbon cable plugged into the space in the board where it should go. So the upside is your laptop's power consumption is somewhat reduced - but only on AC since that LED would not light on battery anyway.

Also of note is the LEDs all appear to be more white than the G51J's from what I observed - it seemed 'bluer' when I saw it at the ASUS Canada showroom earlier today.

So it seems the G51Jx will have a distinct lid LED pattern from the G51J - I have to say I'm not really a fan, and I may still open up my lid at some point to check if I do have the LED or not and if it is possible to hook it up - however from what I observed in a newer G51Jx unit that is no longer an option so I guess I can consider myself lucky. Of course I may also open it up and disconnect all the LEDs as well, or possibly just the side ones so I can sleep at night with the unit running.... Tempering that is though that I received a Razer Salmosa instead of a Abyssus that newer units now include - but we are all still getting the free 1333Mhz Memory Upgrade on all 3 2GB RAM sticks so on balance it's still a positive setup overall.

Either way though - the G51Jx has now had just about every issue either fixed, worked around or explained - so I have to say on balance, I'm quite happy .

So all we're waiting for now is for nVidia to issue some official 300M Series drivers - they've resolved the desktop 300 series issues and reposted those - so here's hoping the mobile drivers are coming soon

Hi Peter,
Sorry did not reply & post outcome parameters after changed original HDD with OCZ Vertex Turbo ( was away for 2 weeks) but all I've to say it's defenately much faster ( boot, start up applications, programms, read/write speed) - 100% worth it but costly( nearly 1/4 of laptop cost). I've actually took a screenshots of tests but sorry don't know how to place them here on site???All your posts here very usefull have to admit you've done a great job man.
I've got a question about GTS360m driver 8.16.11.8766.It's definately old & the only one available at this moment,it does not support any 3D ?? -should be really updated long ago.  I wasn't able to play new game METRO 2030 (was crashing straight away and warning screen poped up "" D3D -update video driver "") until I've updated Nvidia PhysX to v.9.09.1112 ( but warning screen still poping up). Wonder if you got any idea about any other compatibale driver? - cause I've try to install 192.62 laptop driver - did not support our  laptop. Also I've used your link to update BIOS to v.205( but never had a problem with 204). Thanks........

Hey maverick, No problem at all - Actually you can upload images using the Image Upload Tool located here. You can certainly use that to post those screenshots - though if they are more than 500pixels long please link to them with url tags rather than posting them with img takes so the page doesn't get too wide for viewers - thanks . I have links to it on the Review, Article, etc.. posting pages - and it's true maybe I should add one on the standard Advanced Forum post page as well - I'll take that into consideration .

To get a newer driver to work go to laptopvideo2go.com and download both the driver and the modded INF. There was an issue with some of the INF files there and they did not work out of the box with the GTS360M. For your convenience though I have posted the 196.86 drivers that I installed here: zip/G51JX-GTS360M-Modded-196.86_win7x64.zip. The file should be done uploading about 30 minutes after this post was posted .

I'm glad what I've posted has been useful to you and I'll continue to post info as I learn or find it ,

PJPeter
